A Physiotherapy approach of the drooling control in the cerebral palsy: a case study

Abstract

Introduction: drooling is a major problem that appears in many cases of infant cerebral palsy, creating disorders in children, both physical and psychological. Case report: clinical case of a 9 years old boy, diagnosed as cerebral palsy and drooling disorders. Objective: to present a sequence of physiotherapy maneuvers aimed at hand, in order to normalize the musculature and thereby affect on the stomatognathic system structures for drooling control. Results: after a period of 16 sessions, changes can be seen in the patient, such as achieve a better head control, reduced mouth opening and reduced extensor thrust. The drooling reduction is observed even more, after each treatment session. Conclusion: the physiotherapy approach at the drooling control from distal structures has shown benefits after the sessions as well as limitations with a view to future studies
