Improvement of the quality of life and decrease in pain in patients with fibromyalgia treated by manual therapy EUD

Úbeda-Docasar E.

Abstract

Introduction: study of the use of EUD (Edurne Úbeda Docasar) manual therapy created by the author in patients with fibromyalgia. Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of the EUD manual therapy on pain reduction and quality of life in patients with fibromyalgia compared to myofascial massage. Material and method: a quasi-experimental study comparing two treatment techniques. Each patient is his own control. The study included 12 patients who voluntarily came to join the study, whose criteria were to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia over three years since diagnosis and woman between 30 and 60. Excluding patients with diabetes and multiple chemical sensitivity. This study was carried out in the private practice of the researcher whose involvement began in november 2012 to july 2013. Independent variable: manual therapy. Main dependent variables: degree of pain measured with algometry, measured degree of VAS (Visual Analog Scale) pain and FIQ questionnaires (FM Impact Questionnaire) and SF-12 (Quality of Life in FM). Results: this study provides statistically significant differences obtained by VAS scale with an improvement of 50 % of the patients with EUD intervention (p = 0.005) and no worsening. The results of the FIQ and SF-12 questionnaires do not provide conclusive evidence as to the effectiveness of interventions either obtaining different results. Algometry provides significant differences in therapy EUD in romboidea and suboccipital muscles. No patient leaves the study. Conclusion: the intervention EUD significantly improves pain data measured with VAS compared with conventional surgery.
